Roger Federer, on Sunday, announced that he would be pulling out of the French Open ahead of his fourth-round match against Matteo Berrettini.

The 39-year-old Swiss star was playing in his first Grand Slam since reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open in 2020, and made it into the last 16 with a gruelling four-set win over Dominik Koepfer on Saturday.

The 2009 Roland Garros winner cited past issues with his knee and fatigue as reasons for withdrawing from the tournament.

Federer also had to play four sets against Marin Cilic in a second-round match.

The 20-time Grand Slam winner will likely shift his attention to the upcoming grass season, in which he will be aiming to claim a record-extending ninth Wimbledon title.
